Being a Good Member of Christ’s Body

(This is the gist or outline of my World Changers/Giant Slayers class discussion this last Sunday - - May 4, 2024. 12 mostly elementary age boys and girls with lots of energy :) )

Question # 1. What kind of things did Jesus do in His earthly ministry?

Question # 2. Do you think Jesus still wants those things to be done for people today?

Question # 3. How can that happen since He is gone/in heaven?

And He put all things in subjection under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” Ephesians 1:22,23

He does His works through His representative body – the church.

Question # 4. Why do you think the Holy Spirit directed the apostle Paul to use the word body to describe the church?  29 verses speak to the body in the N.T.

For just as we have many members in one body, and all the members do not have the same function, so we who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.”  Romans 12:4,5

For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.” I Corinthians 12:12

Do you know how many organs the human body has?  78   heart, brain, liver, kidneys, lungs

How many members or acting parts? Hands, fingers, feet, toes, legs, arms, eyes, tongue/mouth, neck, head, etc.

Question # 5. How do you think Jesus feels about His body?

“….He Himself being the Savior of the body.” Ephesians 5:23

“…Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,”  Ephesians 5:25

for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,” Ephesians 5:29

Question # 6. Do you know how and when Paul first got a glimpse of this?

and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Sau, why are you persecuting Me?”  Acts 9:4

And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting,” Acts 9:5

Question # 7. How does a person get in the body of Christ or become a member of the body of Christ?

For by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body…”  I Corinthians 12:13

God Himself places us in His body or His church when we place our faith and trust in Christ to be our Savior and Lord.

But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body just as He desired.”  I Corinthians 12:18

Question #8. Once we are in the body of Christ, how should we look at or think of ourselves?

If the foot says, Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body, “It is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.” I Corinthians 12:15

Jesus does not appreciate it when we think of ourselves as less important than someone else.

Question # 9. Once we are in the body of Christ, how should we look at others?

And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, or again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.”  I Corinthians 12:21

so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.”  I Corinthians 12:25

Jesus does not appreciate it when we think less of a member of His body than He does.

Question # 10. How is the body of Christ strengthened and held together?

and not holding fast to the head, from whom the entire body, being supplied and held together by the joints and ligaments, grows with a growth which is from God.” Colossians 2:19

And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ.”  Ephesians 4:11,12

Question # 11. How should we members feel if we learn another member is suffering?

And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.” I Corinthians 12:26
