Commands in the New Testament to Believers Re: Satan & Demons

Updated: Nov 7, 2019

Lots of talk out there about spiritual warfare these days. Seems best to me to start with what is very clear in scripture re: our responsibility. Encouraging to me from meditating on these commands that we have the power and authority in Christ to resist the most powerful supernatural being (other than Jesus Christ and His angels) in the Universe. Being familiar with the context of these passages is very helpful in obeying the commands. May he be an increasingly defeated foe!

1. “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry….and I do not want you to become sharers in demons…” I Cor. 10:14-21

2. “….and do not give the devil an opportunity.” Eph. 4:27

3. “Finally be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might.” Eph. 6:10

4. “Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” Eph. 6:11

5. “Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything to stand firm.” Eph. 6:13

6. “Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIHTEOUSNESS,” Eph. 6:14

7. “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7

8. “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” I Peter 5:8 (cf. context = vs. 5-9)

9. “But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.” I Peter 5:9
