Holy & Holiness in the Old Testament re: our Triune God

Over the last weeks I have been compiling and sorting every reference to the word "holy" and "holiness" in the Old and New Testaments. Some day I will write on the holiness of God and on our call to pursue holiness. But for now I want to make these sortings available as a resource to those who might want to do their own study or use them for their own meditations. The following verses all speak to God's holiness. May the Lord open our eyes and give us revelation of these most important matters.


Exo 15:11 - "Who is like You among the gods, O LORD? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders?


Exo 15:13 - "In Your lovingkindness You have led the people whom You have redeemed; In Your strength You have guided [them] to Your holy habitation.


Lev 10:3 - Then Moses said to Aaron, "It is what the LORD spoke, saying, 'By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.'" So Aaron, therefore, kept silent.


Lev 11:44 - 'For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth.


Lev 11:45 - 'For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.'"


Lev 19:2 - "Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them, 'You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.


Lev 20:3 - 'I will also set My face against that man and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given some of his offspring to Molech, so as to defile My sanctuary and to profane My holy name.


Lev 20:26 - 'Thus you are to be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine.


Lev 21:8 - 'You shall consecrate him, therefore, for he offers the food of your God; he shall be holy to you; for I the LORD, who sanctifies you, am holy.


Lev 22:2 - "Tell Aaron and his sons to be careful with the holy [gifts] of the sons of Israel, which they dedicate to Me, so as not to profane My holy name; I am the LORD.


Lev 22:32 - "You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be sanctified among the sons of Israel; I am the LORD who sanctifies you,


Num 20:12 - But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."


Num 20:13 - Those [were] the waters of Meribah, because the sons of Israel contended with the LORD, and He proved Himself holy among them.


Num 27:14 - for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, you rebelled against My command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water." (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)


Deu 32:51 - because you broke faith with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, because you did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel.


Jos 24:19 - Then Joshua said to the people, "You will not be able to serve the LORD, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgression or your sins.


1Sa 2:2 - "There is no one holy like the LORD, Indeed, there is no one besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.


1Sa 6:20 - The men of Beth-shemesh said, "Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God? And to whom shall He go up from us?"


2Ki 19:22 - 'Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you raised [your] voice, And haughtily lifted up your eyes? Against the Holy One of Israel!


1Ch 16:10 - Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek the LORD be glad.


1Ch 16:35 - Then say, "Save us, O God of our salvation, And gather us and deliver us from the nations, To give thanks to Your holy name, And glory in Your praise."


1Ch 23:13 - The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to sanctify him as most holy, he and his sons forever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister to Him and to bless in His name forever.


1Ch 29:16 - "O LORD our God, all this abundance that we have provided to build You a house for Your holy name, it is from Your hand, and all is Yours.


Job 6:10 - "But it is still my consolation, And I rejoice in unsparing pain, That I have not denied the words of the Holy One.


Psa 2:6 - "But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain."


Psa 3:4 - I was crying to the LORD with my voice, And He answered me from His holy mountain. Selah.


Psa 5:7 - But as for me, by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house, At Your holy temple I will bow in reverence for You.


Psa 11:4 - The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD'S throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.


Psa 15:1 - O LORD, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy hill?


Psa 16:10 - For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.


Psa 20:6 - Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand.


Psa 22:3 - Yet You are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.


Psa 24:3 - Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? And who may stand in His holy place?


Psa 28:2 - Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to You for help, When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary.


Psa 30:4 - Sing praise to the LORD, you His godly ones, And give thanks to His holy name.


Psa 33:21 - For our heart rejoices in Him, Because we trust in His holy name.


Psa 43:3 - O send out Your light and Your truth, let them lead me; Let them bring me to Your holy hill And to Your dwelling places.


Psa 46:4 - There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The holy dwelling places of the Most High.


Psa 47:8 - God reigns over the nations, God sits on His holy throne.


Psa 48:1. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, In the city of our God, His holy mountain.


Psa 51:11 - Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.


Psa 60:6 - God has spoken in His holiness: "I will exult, I will portion out Shechem and measure out the valley of Succoth.


Psa 65:4 - How blessed is the one whom You choose and bring near [to You] To dwell in Your courts. We will be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, Your holy temple. Psa 68:5 - A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, Is God in His holy habitation.


Psa 68:17 - The chariots of God are myriads, thousands upon thousands; The Lord is among them [as at] Sinai, in holiness.


Psa 71:22 - I will also praise You with a harp, [Even] Your truth, O my God; To You I will sing praises with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.


Psa 77:13 - Your way, O God, is holy; What god is great like our God?


Psa 78:41 - Again and again they tempted God, And pained the Holy One of Israel.


Psa 89:18 - For our shield belongs to the LORD, And our king to the Holy One of Israel.


Psa 89:35 - "Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David.


Psa 97:12 - Be glad in the LORD, you righteous ones, And give thanks to His holy name.


Psa 98:1 - . O sing to the LORD a new song, For He has done wonderful things, His right hand and His holy arm have gained the victory for Him.


Psa 99:3 - Let them praise Your great and awesome name; Holy is He.


Psa 99:5 - Exalt the LORD our God And worship at His footstool; Holy is He.


Psa 99:9 - Exalt the LORD our God And worship at His holy hill, For holy is the LORD our God.


Psa 102:19 - For He looked down from His holy height; From heaven the LORD gazed upon the earth,


Psa 103:1 - . Bless the LORD, O my soul, And all that is within me, [bless] His holy name.


Psa 105:3 - Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek the LORD be glad.


Psa 105:42 - For He remembered His holy word [With] Abraham His servant;


Psa 106:47 - Save us, O LORD our God, And gather us from among the nations, To give thanks to Your holy name And glory in Your praise.


Psa 108:7 - God has spoken in His holiness: "I will exult, I will portion out Shechem And measure out the valley of Succoth.


Psa 111:9 - He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name.


Psa 145:21 - My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD, And all flesh will bless His holy name forever and ever.


Pro 9:10 - The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.


Pro 30:3 - Neither have I learned wisdom, Nor do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.


Isa 1:4 - Alas, sinful nation, People weighed down with iniquity, Offspring of evildoers, Sons who act corruptly! They have abandoned the LORD, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned away from Him.


Isa 5:16 - But the LORD of hosts will be exalted in judgment, And the holy God will show Himself holy in righteousness.


Isa 5:19 - Who say, "Let Him make speed, let Him hasten His work, that we may see [it;] And let the purpose of the Holy One of Israel draw near And come to pass, that we may know [it!]"


Isa 5:24 - Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble And dry grass collapses into the flame, So their root will become like rot and their blossom blow away as dust; For they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.


Isa 6:3 - And one called out to another and said, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory."


Isa 8:13 - "It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy. And He shall be your fear, And He shall be your dread.


Isa 10:17 - And the light of Israel will become a fire and his Holy One a flame, And it will burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a single day.


Isa 10:20 - Now in that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.


Isa 12:6 - Cry aloud and shout for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, For great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.


Isa 17:7 - In that day man will have regard for his Maker And his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel.


Isa 29:19 - The afflicted also will increase their gladness in the LORD, And the needy of mankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.


Isa 29:23 - But when he sees his children, the work of My hands, in his midst, They will sanctify My name; Indeed, they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob And will stand in awe of the God of Israel.


Isa 30:11 - "Get out of the way, turn aside from the path, Let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel."


Isa 30:12 - Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel, "Since you have rejected this word And have put your trust in oppression and guile, and have relied on them,


Isa 30:15 - For thus the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said, "In repentance and rest you will be saved, In quietness and trust is your strength." But you were not willing,


Isa 31:1 - Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help [And] rely on horses, And trust in chariots because they are many And in horsemen because they are very strong, But they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the LORD!


Isa 37:23 - "Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you raised [your] voice And haughtily lifted up your eyes? Against the Holy One of Israel!


Isa 40:25 - "To whom then will you liken Me That I would be [his] equal?" says the Holy One.


Isa 41:14 - "Do not fear, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel; I will help you," declares the LORD, "and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.


Isa 41:16 - "You will winnow them, and the wind will carry them away, And the storm will scatter them; But you will rejoice in the LORD, You will glory in the Holy One of Israel.


Isa 41:20 - That they may see and recognize, And consider and gain insight as well, That the hand of the LORD has done this, And the Holy One of Israel has created it.


Isa 43:3 - "For I am the LORD your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I have given Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in your place.


Isa 43:14 - Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, "For your sake I have sent to Babylon, And will bring them all down as fugitives, Even the Chaldeans, into the ships in which they rejoice.


Isa 43:15 - "I am the LORD, your Holy One, The Creator of Israel, your King."


Isa 45:11 - Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker: "Ask Me about the things to come concerning My sons, And you shall commit to Me the work of My hands.


Isa 47:4 - Our Redeemer, the LORD of hosts is His name, The Holy One of Israel.


Isa 48:2 - "For they call themselves after the holy city And lean on the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is His name.


Isa 48:17 - Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, Who leads you in the way you should go.


Isa 49:7 - Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel [and] its Holy One, To the despised One, To the One abhorred by the nation, To the Servant of rulers, "Kings will see and arise, Princes will also bow down, Because of the LORD who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You."


Isa 52:10 - The LORD has bared His holy arm In the sight of all the nations, That all the ends of the earth may see The salvation of our God.


Isa 54:5 - "For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the LORD of hosts; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, Who is called the God of all the earth.


Isa 55:5 - "Behold, you will call a nation you do not know, And a nation which knows you not will run to you, Because of the LORD your God, even the Holy One of Israel; For He has glorified you."


Isa 57:15 - For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, "I dwell [on] a high and holy place, And [also] with the contrite and lowly of spirit In order to revive the spirit of the lowly And to revive the heart of the contrite.


Isa 60:9 - "Surely the coastlands will wait for Me; And the ships of Tarshish [will come] first, To bring your sons from afar, Their silver and their gold with them, For the name of the LORD your God, And for the Holy One of Israel because He has glorified you.


Isa 60:14 - "The sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you, And all those who despised you will bow themselves at the soles of your feet; And they will call you the city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.


Isa 62:12 - And they will call them, "The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD"; And you will be called, "Sought out, a city not forsaken."


Isa 63:10 - But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them.


Isa 63:11 - Then His people remembered the days of old, of Moses. Where is He who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is He who put His Holy Spirit in the midst of them,


Isa 63:15 - Look down from heaven and see from Your holy and glorious habitation; Where are Your zeal and Your mighty deeds? The stirrings of Your heart and Your compassion are restrained toward me.


Jer 23:9 - As for the prophets: My heart is broken within me, All my bones tremble; I have become like a drunken man, Even like a man overcome with wine, Because of the LORD And because of His holy words.


Jer 25:30 - "Therefore you shall prophesy against them all these words, and you shall say to them, 'The LORD will roar from on high And utter His voice from His holy habitation; He will roar mightily against His fold. He will shout like those who tread [the grapes,] Against all the inhabitants of the earth.


Jer 50:29 - "Summon many against Babylon, All those who bend the bow: Encamp against her on every side, Let there be no escape. Repay her according to her work; According to all that she has done, [so] do to her; For she has become arrogant against the LORD, Against the Holy One of Israel.


Jer 51:5 - For neither Israel nor Judah has been forsaken By his God, the LORD of hosts, Although their land is full of guilt Before the Holy One of Israel.


Eze 20:39 - "As for you, O house of Israel," thus says the Lord GOD, "Go, serve everyone his idols; but later you will surely listen to Me, and My holy name you will profane no longer with your gifts and with your idols.


Eze 20:41 - "As a soothing aroma I will accept you when I bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered; and I will prove Myself holy among you in the sight of the nations.


Eze 28:14 - "You were the anointed cherub who covers, And I placed you [there.] You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked in the midst of the stones of fire.


Eze 28:22 - and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am against you, O Sidon, And I will be glorified in your midst. Then they will know that I am the LORD when I execute judgments in her, And I will manifest My holiness in her.


Eze 28:25 - 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and will manifest My holiness in them in the sight of the nations, then they will live in their land which I gave to My servant Jacob.


Eze 36:20 - "When they came to the nations where they went, they profaned My holy name, because it was said of them, 'These are the people of the LORD; yet they have come out of His land.'


Eze 36:21 - "But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations where they went.


Eze 36:22 - "Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went.


Eze 36:23 - "I will vindicate the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD," declares the Lord GOD, "when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight.


Eze 39:7 - "My holy name I will make known in the midst of My people Israel; and I will not let My holy name be profaned anymore. And the nations will know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.


Eze 39:25 - Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name.


Eze 43:7 - He said to me, "Son of man, [this is] the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell among the sons of Israel forever. And the house of Israel will not again defile My holy name, neither they nor their kings, by their harlotry and by the corpses of their kings when they die,


Eze 43:8 - by setting their threshold by My threshold and their door post beside My door post, with [only] the wall between Me and them. And they have defiled My holy name by their abominations which they have committed. So I have consumed them in My anger.


Hos 11:9 - I will not execute My fierce anger; I will not destroy Ephraim again. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst, And I will not come in wrath.


Hos 11:12 - Ephraim surrounds Me with lies And the house of Israel with deceit; Judah is also unruly against God, Even against the Holy One who is faithful.


Amo 2:7 - "These who pant after the [very] dust of the earth on the head of the helpless Also turn aside the way of the humble; And a man and his father resort to the same girl In order to profane My holy name.


Amo 4:2 - The Lord GOD has sworn by His holiness, "Behold, the days are coming upon you When they will take you away with meat hooks, And the last of you with fish hooks.


Hab 1:12 - Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. You, O LORD, have appointed them to judge; And You, O Rock, have established them to correct.


Hab 2:20 - "But the LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him."


Hab 3:3 - God comes from Teman, And the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor covers the heavens, And the earth is full of His praise.


Zec 2:13 - "Be silent, all flesh, before the LORD; for He is aroused from His holy habitation."
