I've been working on this study today in keeping with our ongoing sermon series on the Holy Spirit and to prepare for my discussion with our elementary aged children this Sunday.
It is very important that we believers understand how absolutely dependent and responsive to the Holy Spirit Jesus was when He lived on the earth. It is very important that we believers understand that everything Jesus saw, said, knew, and did while He was on earth (before His resurrection) was not at all because He was God (though of course He was and is God), for He denied Himself the right to draw upon the attributes of His deity (see Philippians 2:5-8); but rather it was because of His relationship as one fully human with the Holy Spirit.
Everything Jesus saw, knew, said and did was made possible by His relationship with the Holy Spirit. May your meditations on the Scriptures below help you see this and pursue such a relationship with the Holy Spirit for yourself (with the exception of being conceived by the Holy Spirit of course).
I. Jesus’s Relationship with the Holy Spirit
Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 1:18
“….behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,”Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 1:20
“The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:35,
Jesus was Baptized/Filled by the Holy Spirit
“After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,..” Matthew 3:16
“BEHOLD, MY SERVANT WHOM I HAVE CHOSEN; MY BELOVED IN WHOM MY SOUL IS WELL-PLEASED; I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT UPON HIM,…”Matthew 12:18
“Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;” Mark 1:10
“and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove,…” Luke 3:22,
Jesus was Led by the Holy Spirit
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” Matthew 4:1
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness.” Luke 4:1
“Immediately the Spirit, impelled Him to go out into the wilderness.” Mark 1:12
Jesus was Full of the Holy Spirit
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness.” Luke 4:1
Jesus was Empowered by Holy Spirit
“And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district.” Luke 4:14
The Holy Spirit was Upon Jesus
“THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.” Luke 4:18
The Holy Spirit Anointed Jesus
“THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.” Luke 4:18
The Holy Spirit Sent Jesus

Jesus Cast out demons by the Spirit of God
“But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” Matt. 12:28
Jesus will baptize people with the Holy Spirit
“….He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Luke 3:16
“John testified saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in the water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.” John 1:32,33,
Jesus Rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit
“At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants….”Luke 10:21
Jesus will send the Helper/Spirit of truth from the Father to His disciples
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about Me,” John 15:26
