Guarding Over the Gift of Early Mornings with God

“Felt guilty, defeated, and depressed all day. Didn’t have Quiet time. Failed to get up in time.” February 8, 1976   From my journal :)

By the time I heard of the concept of having a daily quiet time, which was in my last year or two of high school, I had already developed the habit of sleeping in as long as I could. Literally my mother would wake me up, I would come to the breakfast table and eat and then go back to bed until the very last minute possible to be able to still get to school before the bell rang.

So when I moved to San Jose a few months shy of my 20th Birthday (August of 1975) and got involved with the Navigators, who beat loudly the drum of having an early morning quiet time every day, I initially dealt with lots of failure and discouragement. This situation was not helped by being around a number of ex military guys in the Navigator ministry, who were very disciplined (especially compared to me). And it wasn’t helped by my lack of standing in my identity in Christ, which is not based on performance.

Almost 50 years later, looking back on all of that, I still think undistracted time alone with the Living God as early in the morning as possible is still one of the greatest gifts He has given to us.

So I’ve spent some time over the last week or so editing and enhancing an old post entitled “Mornings – A Gift from God”. May the Holy Spirit use it to give my dear readers a shot in the arm or some needed spiritual stimulus to keep guarding over this precious gift from God.
