PRINCIPLES 1. Healing was a major part of the ministry of Jesus Christ. Of the 3,774 verses in the four gospels, 484 relate specifically to the healing of physical and/or mental illness, demonization and the resurrection of the dead. More impressive, of the 1,257 narrative verses in the gospels, 484 verse – 38.5% are devoted to Jesus’s healing ministry. Matt. 4:23,24; 9:35,

2. Jesus healed people out of a compassionate heart and in response to the leading of the Holy Spirit Compassion = Mark 1:40-42; Matt. 20:29-34; H.S. – Mt. 3:16 “..after being baptized…Spirit of God descending.. and coming upon Him.” Matt. 4:1 “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” John 5:30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

3. Jesus’s healing ministry resulted in glory to God and in many being drawn to faith in Him. Matt. 9:2-8

4. Every healing was different in who initiated it, how it came about and what it resulted in.

5. The root cause of people’s sickness was sometimes sin (Matt. 9:2; Jn. 5:1-14), sometimes demonic (Luke 13:10-17), and sometimes not apparent.

6. Only on two occasions was the (stated) purpose of the healing to authenticate the deity of Christ. Matt. 9:6 “But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sin…….Rise take up your bed, and go home.” John 11:4,41,42

7. Many were healed because caring friends or relatives brought them to Jesus. Matt. 14:34-36

8. When Jesus sent out the 12 and the 70 – His command and expectation was that they would heal the sick. Matt. 10:1 & Luke 10:1,9; cf. Mark 16:17,18

9. When Matthew wrote about Jesus healing the multitudes in 8:16, he went on to tie His healing ministry to the prophecy made in Isaiah 53 re: healing being in the atonement (cf. I Peter 2:24). sozo double meaning.

10. God’s heart for the sick can be seen through how many of these passages use the word “all” (Mt. 12:15; 14:35,36; Luke 4:40; 6:19; Acts 10:38;

CONCLUSION – Jesus Christ has a huge heart for the sick and demonized. Healing was a very significant part of His ministry. And the good news is – His healing ministry continues through His willing servants.
